Abstract
Using data from his 1977 excavations and others work in central Mexico, Smith seriated the Postclassic ceramics to create a Postclassic chronology. 'Next [Smith] provides summary descriptions of the major Postclassic ceramic types at Xochicalco. To set the small Postclassic settlements at Xochicalco into a wider regional perspective, [Smith] then describes nearby Postclassic sites. After this background [Smith] examines processes of change in the Xochicalco area during Postclassic times, including the arrival of Nahuatl-speaking Tlahuica peoples and a series of regional economic transformations that followed.' (page 167). To examine the regional economy Smith compares local and imported ceramics, cotton spinning, and wealth levels (the frequency of local decorated ceramics plus two times the frequence of imported ceramics).
