Abstract
This dissertation analyzes the relationship between the evolution of complex society and craft specialization. Costin suggests four parameters which characterize the organization of production which she defines in the text and identifies their underlying causes. These parameters are: the context of production (i.e., demand and control over the disposition of finished goods), the spatial organization of production (geographic distribution of resources and the nature of control over those resources), the constitution of production units (small kin-based or large workshop), and the intensity of specialization (part or full-time). These parameters are then applied to the organization of ceramic production among the prehispanic Wanka of Highland Peru, particularly the Wanka II period of 650-540 B.P.(1350-1460 A.D.), in which several chiefdoms developed, and the results are then compared and contrasted with the Wanka III period (650-540 B.P.) during which the Wanka were incorporated into the Inca (Inka) empire. 'Two complimentary data bases are examined to determine the organization of production and the intimately linked patterns of ceramic exchange among six Wanka communities. Direct evidence consists of tools and by products associated with manufacture. Indirect evidence consists of the amount of standardization in technology and raw materials' (p. xxi). Because Wanka III lies outside the time range of this file unit, exclusive data on this period have not been indexed for OCM categories in this document.
