Abstract
This is a study of the Bell Beaker culture of Spain and Portugal, written in an attempt to throw some light on one of the most vexing problems in the archaeology of the late Neolithic period in western Europe, namely the formation, distribution, and origins of the Beaker people. Harrison methodically examines the history of Beaker research in Iberia, discusses his own methods of analysis, and presents a detailed study of Beaker pottery typology. Next he explores the quality and extent of the archaeological data from the various sites in Portugal and Spain -- the Tagus estuary, north Portugal and Galicia, the Meseta region, Andalucia, Cataluna and the Levant, and central Europe. The remainder of the study consists of a catalogue of the individual sites from the regions listed above. Each entry references and describes the site, discusses any stratigraphy or C-14 dates, and describes the Beaker material (with a heavy emphasis on Beaker pottery as a diagnostic feature of the culture).
