AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
Posnansky provides an overview of long-distance trade throughout northern Africa from about 3000 BC to about 1800. Posnansky especially writes of the gold and copper trade-which he sees as the basis for much of the long distance trade. The town of Begho, Ghana and its importance to early historic trading in Ghana is discussed, mainly from 1400-1750 AD. The author conducted preliminary excavations at that town and those findings are summarized. The settlement was initially thought to date to circa 1400 AD, but subsequent excavations and radiocarbon dates have pushed the occupation back to circa 1100 AD.
