Mitchell synthesizes the data of the Later Stone Age south of the Limpopo River. He uses ethnographic data from modern hunter-gatherers to help interprete the archaeological data of the Later Stone Age peoples. This article provides information on the environment, climate, and geology of the area south of the Limpopo River from 10,000 B.P. to the present. It also points out the differences between Oakhurst, Wilton and Post-classic Wilton assemblages and provides information on subsistence, seasonal mobility, demography (based on radiocarbon dates from sites), settlement patterns, exchange and rock art.
