Abstract
This book is essentially an ethnographic reconstruction of Scythian life based partially on the writings of early authors (e.g., Herodotus), and partially on the analysis of the archaeological remains found at various sites and tombs in southern Russia. Although Rice presents information on the historical background of the Scythians and on the people themselves (clothing styles, physical appearance, use of the horse, and other material goods), the main focus of the work seems to be on the analysis of the artifacts from the tombs of the region, with particular emphasis on art styles. A concluding chapter describes the effects of the Scythian legacy on the development of later cultures in the region (e.g., Slavs, Sarmatians, etc.).
