Abstract
This book provides an excellent descriptive overview of the Sumerians and other peoples living in and around Mesopotamia from the Uruk period through the Ur III dynasty (or from about 5800 B.P.-4000 B.P. or 3800 B.C.-2000 B.C.). However, only material that pertains to the Early Dynastic Period was indexed for Outline of Cultural Materials (OCM) codes. Crawford describes the physical environment, Sumerian history, settlement patterns, agriculture, architecture (from private dwellings to temples), burial practices and what they tell us about everyday life verses ritual/temple life, dress, manufacturing, trade, and writing. She also provides an overview of the role the king/palace and the priests/temple had in governing the Sumerians.
