Abstract
Marks reports on the results of the American fieldwork in the Wadi Halfa area. Living sites, flaking stations, and quarries were found. Most of the sites were found on the tops of inselbergs without any stratigraphy, but a few sites were subsurface. The material was studied using typologies and technological indices developed by F. Bordes. Marks describes the sites and then compares their assemblages. Marks also compares the Nubian material to other Mousterian sites in North Africa, the Near East, and France to try to determine the place of origin of the Nubian Mousterian. He concludes that '…the Nubian Mousterian is basically a local development, perhaps influenced by the diffusion of ideas and techniques from outside Nubia.' (page 314).
