The authors use projectile points, '[in] order to place the Early and Middle Archaic Periods into a definitive temporal framework' (page 61). Egloff and McAvoy only use projectile points from dated and stratified contexts in this analysis. Based on new definitions for the Late Archaic, the Middle Archaic is seen to extend from 8500-8000 B.P. to 4500 B.P. although they point out there can be time lags as a cultural trait moves from one end of the state to the other. Seven areas are emphasized in this discussion: Nottoway River, Gaston, Haw River, Hardaway and Doerschuk, Thunderbird and Fifty, St. Albans, and Little Tennessee River-Tellico Project.
