Abstract
Gremillion summarizes paleobotanical data dating from the Middle and Late Archaic throughout the southeast. She examines diet and points out the long stability in nut use does not seem to be true for coastal sites. The long period of nut use may have entailed changes in settlement patterns, in storage, and in processing technology. She looks at initial plant domestication. Harvesting and replanting of seeds began before 4000 B.P., although earliest use may have been for seeds and for a container crop. Gremillion also discusses what research needs to be done in the future.
