Abstract
Reid presents a revised version of his dissertation on Nebo Hill phase sites. Most of this publication is based on the type site of Nebo Hill (23CL11). The Nebo Hill phase people were late Archaic and had fiber tempered pottery and a proto-horticultural economy. The excavations, findings, and analysis of the artifacts and features are described. Cultural material was almost entirely found in one strata at 23CL11 which is entirely within the zone of maximum frost penetration. Post-depositional effects on the site and the artifacts are explored in depth. It is speculated that the lack of organics and the few fiber tempered ceramics are due to harsh post-depositional processes such as frost. Reid proposes that the distribution of fiber-tempered potsherds south of 35 degrees north latitude may be mostly due to frost action. Indirect evidence of cultivation includes bifacial hoes, a knife with silica polish, tools suitable for clearing garden plots, and grinding and milling slabs. Spatial analysis of the features indicates the presence of two structures and activity areas at the sites. Nebo Hill is compared to Sedalia complex and Titterington focus and other earlier and later groups on the southern Prairie Peninsula.
