Abstract
Lewis provides one answer to the question of why Early Woodland base camps are so rare in Illinois. Lewis points out the Early Woodland time period is only 20-30% as long as the Late Archaic time period and ceramics have to be found to identify a site as Early Woodland. His conclusion is that '…Early Woodland base camps should be scarce, if not almost archaeologically invisible, relative to comparable Late Archaic sites.' (page 596).
