AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This is a cultural resource management report on the excavation and analysis of a multicomponent site. It was conducted in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. About 11,736 square meters or about 70 percent of the site was excavated. The Statz site's main occupations date from the Middle to Late Archaic and the Late Woodland. The Late Woodland occupation was the most extensive component at the site. Only the data that pertain to or might pertain to the Late Woodland occupation were indexed for OCM (Outline of Cultural Materials) subjects. 'During excavation, 194 cultural features were identified representing primarily pits, debitage concentrations and semi-subterranean (keyhole) structures. The primary focus of the Late Woodland occupation was a small community of six structures and associated features…. Three household clusters were defined, consisting of paired structures and associated pits. The ceramic assemblage included heavy cord-impressed jars, Madison series ceramics and collared vessels [and pipe fragments, daub and burned clay]. The lithic assemblage included unnotched triangular points and metates [and expedient tools and debitage].' (page xiii). Meinholz spends considerable time analyzing the keyhole structures, their associated contents, and Late Woodland community or household structure. The Late Woodland occupation was probably during the late fall or winter. The Statz site is compared to other sites in the Wisconsin area and keyhole structures are compared with others found from Pennsylvania to New York to Wisconsin.
