expand_more Description
The tradition known as Eastern Late Woodland is found from southern Canada to the United States Gulf Coast and from west of the Mississippi to the Atlantic Ocean. The time period dates from 1300 to 500 BP. The tradition encompasses several different sub-traditions with Blackduck and Effigy Mound being the most prominent in the collection. Woodland peoples were semi-sedentary hunters-gatherers and fishers, with an egalitarian political organization. Towards the end of the time period maize had become a staple.
