Abstract
The lower Ohio Valley has long been noted as one of the areas of classic Mississippian cultural development, yet refined chronological control is still lacking and there are some significant differences of opinion regarding portions of the local sequence. A critical element in the chronology problem has always been the Kincaid site, the regional-class mound center located on the Ohio near its confluence with the Tennessee and the Cumberland rivers. This article reviews the Mississippian chronological framework for the region in view of previously existing and newly acquired data from Kincaid and other sites (p.264).
