Abstract
The people of Tonto Basin made most of the tools, vessels, and clothing they needed from material obtained in the vicinity of their own settlements. However, some raw material, as well as completed commodities, came from locations that lay tens to hundred of kilometers away and were obtained through various mechanisms of long-distance exchange; similarly, some of the commodies produced at settlement in Tonto basin were tradeed out to more distant localities. In addition to a lengthy discussion of the items circulating in exchange, this paper describes the manner in which settlements in the Tonto Basis competed against each other in various exchange transactions. Trade, according to the authors, can be as much a mechanism for competition as cooperation, and it appears that competition at an intrabasin level may have been important to the organization of settlement complexes; neighboring settlements were united into spatial blocs through their shared competition against more distant groups of settlements (p. 105).
