Abstract
Lekson describes the large pueblo ruins that are situated within Chaco Canyon within the National Historical Park. Through archival work and field survey Lekson presents an architectural study of twelve of the great houses. Until this time few of them had been mapped correctly and only the excavated structures had architectural descriptions. He presents the construction history for each great house describing what was built where and when, analyzes building technology, and discusses the labor requirements for construction. Two hypotheses guided the research: what were the social ramifications of construction and what were the social correlates of architectural form? The appendices include a glossary of the architectural terms and a key to tree-ring dating symbols.
