Abstract
Pollard explores the rise of the Tarascan state making extensive reference to the 'Relación de Michoacán' (RM) and the 'Relaciones Geográficas' (RG). In this book, Pollard examines the Tarascan capital, the Lake Pátzcuaro Basin, and the Tarascan state during the Protohistoric period. She discusses warfare, the diverse ethnic groups within the Tarascan state, economic exchange, the administration of the state, religion, and art among other things. She also discusses the Aztec view of the Tarascans and their relations with each other. She incorporates her 1970 fieldwork into this study particularly when examining the settlement patterns within the Tarascan capital of Tzintzuntzan. Her field work data are also presented in greater detail in the appendices. A brief description of the prehistory of west Mexico from the Paleo-Indian period up through the Postclassic period is included in this work.
