Abstract
Diehl writes, 'This book is about the ancient Toltecs and their capital of Tula in central Mexico….[I]t is more a general synthesis of what we know about the Toltecs than a specifically project-oriented work…. [O]ur project was a very broadly conceived attempt to study many facets of Toltec life and the very nature of the results require a broad perspective. …[And] I wanted to provide a book for the general public as well as my professional colleagues.' (page 10). 'The UMC [(University of Missouri-Columbia)] Tula Archaeological Project was a decade-long research program designed to study Toltec life and culture at Tula. This book is a semi-final report and interpretation of the project results…' (page 11). Diehl provides an overview of the Toltecs and compares them to the Aztec and contemporary cultures, looking especially at Toltec contacts throughout Mesoamerica and northern Mexico. His archaeological findings are described, especially the architecture, along with the Toltec economy and their collapse.
