By: Folan, William J..

Abstract
Folan summarizes the geology, soils, hydrography, flora, fauna, and climate of the Yucatan Peninsula. He discusses the mining and quarrying and the mines and quarries, particularly of the SASCAB, around Cobá. SASCAB was 'used by the Maya for the fill of buildings when in block form and, when in granular form, was mixed with lime (often produced by burning chunks of SASCAB) to make mortar. Granular SASCAB was also used, for example, to pave the many SACBEOB in the Cobá area.'
