Bulmer reviews the data on archaeological sites known to exist in 1975 in montane and lowland New Guinea with an emphasis on the settlement and economic data. Eleven sites in the Highlands are discussed (Kosipe, Yuku, Niobe, Kafiavana, Kiowa, Batari Cave, Omkombogo, Aibura, Wanlek, and Manton). For the economic data she mentions in particular evidence of trade, hunting and gathering, pig, and agriculture. She also discusses the climatic and environmental changes since the late Pleistocene and the impact humans have had on the environment.
