AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
This is a detailed archaeological study of the excavation of a Milagro Phase Integration Period cemetery -- the Ayalán cemetery -- located on the southern coast of Ecuador. The site yielded 54 large funerary urns (730 A.D.-1730 A.D.), and 25 primary and two secondary burials (500 B.C.-1155 A.D.).The urns contained secondary skeletal remains of as many as 25 individuals per urn, accompanied by numerous artifacts such as ceramic jars, plates and compoteres, beads, nose rings, copper plates and small spheres of lead with copper inserts. Detailed data are presented in this document on archaeological features, artifacts '…and such biological subjects as demography, pathology, cranial measurements, non-metric observations and cultural practices registered in bone' (p. ii). An appendix written by Brian Hesse, examines the faunal remains associated with the various burial features.
