Abstract
This survey of the Late Neolithic in China provides overviews of sites and regional subtraditions in the Yellow and Yangzi River valleys, where the greatest changes occurred, as well as brief descriptions of cultures in the remainder of country, many of which continued to have a hunting-gathering-fishing economy. The authors are most interested in how complex societies developed, functioned for a time, and then changed. They cover ecological changes, settlement patterns, population movements, warfare, religion, general economy, exchange, technology, hierarchy, and status symbols, pointing out commonalities.
