Abstract
This document provides an overview of the Early Shang subtradition. Because most fieldwork has occurred at sites thought to be cities (as determined by the presence of rammed-earth walls), the author concentrates on those. The discussion includes the various types of cities and their characteristics, settlement hierarchy, social hierarchy as evidenced in burials, communication and early writing, and a brief account of the economy.
