Abstract
China independently developed one of the earliest state societies in the world, and has a long tradition of recording historical events, such as dynastic succession. The authors use archaeological and written evidence, informed by anthropological theory, to study early state formation from the Erlitou through Erligang periods. They pay particular attention to settlement patterns, religious objects, trade, and key resources.
