Current issues in Chinese Neolithic archaeology

By: Underhill, Anne P..

Abstract
Underhill synthesizes the data concerning the origins and development of rice and millet agriculture in northern and southern China from 14,000 B.P.-3900 B.P. Only the data that pertain to the early Neolithic in southern China were indexed for OCM (Outline of Cultural Materials) subjects. She presents the data regionally so patterns can be recognized. Recent excavations in northern Jiangxi indicate people started making pottery around 14,00-11,200 B.P., which may make it as old as or older than the earliest pottery in Japan. Cord-marked pottery doesn't appear until after 11,200 B.P. Also surprizingly early is evidence of cultivation from around 11,200-9550 B.P. Underhill also discusses 'important issues that should be addressed in future studies.' (page 107). '
