Abstract
This is an overview of the African Iron Age. Phillipson mentions two early copper-working sites in Akjoujt, Mauritania and Agadez, Niger. Early iron-working sites include Rim, Burkina Faso; Air, Niger; and Jenné-jeno, Mali. Other Iron Age sites are Nok sites of Nigeria, the Sao sites of Chad, and Begho in Ghana. Later iron-working sites include those in Senegal and Gambia which are associated with a series of large megalithic monuments.
