The prehistoric pottery of Tell Sabi Abyad
excavations at tell sabi abyad: prehistoric investigations in the balikh valley, northern syria • Oxford • Published In 1989 • Pages: 77-213
By: Akkermans, Peter M. M. G..
Abstract
Akkermans analyzed the ceramics from the tell, mostly using diagnostic sherds (as only 6 complete vessels were found) such as rim, base, or decorated sherds. He describes temper, vessel shape, decoration, and compares Tell Sabi Abyad ceramics with other contemporary ones in Syria, Turkey, and Iraq. In the northeastern section of the site the strata and the ceramics divided themselves into Halaf (T4, strata 1-3) and Late Neolithic (T4, strata 4 and T5) with a clear break between the two. In the southeastern section of the site, however, this did not happen and there are several strata that are Transitional (P14, strata 7-9). The Late Neolithic strata are found in P14, strata 10-11. All the other strata were Halaf. The data that pertain to the Ceramic Neolithic and the transitional strata were indexed for OCM (Outline of Cultural Materials)subjects . The Halaf ceramics were not indexed for OCM subjects as there is a separate eHRAF collection on Halaf (M086).
