Abstract
This work consists of a series of reports on the excavations at Shahr-I Sokhta (1967-1970), located in the Sistan region, Hilmand basin, of eastern Iran. The document is divided into four major parts. Part I deals with the geography of the region providing much information on the geology, climate, topography, fauna, and flora of the Sistan area as background to the archaeological setting. Part II provides data on the actual excavations at Shahr-I Sokhta itself with particular emphasis on the structures uncovered at the site. A lengthy discussion of the material culture of Shahr-I Sokhta is described in part III, with emphasis on pottery types and their decoration, and bead making and the boring techniques used in drilling the beads. This section also contains a descriptive analysis of a bronze female statuette and a clay-handled tool found at the site. The final section of this work, part IV, deals with chronologies and dating methods.
