In this article, Margueron discusses the possible function of a unique architectural feature (pilasters)found in Ubaid domestic architecture, circa 5th millenium, at the site of tell es-Sawwan, Iraq. He reviews the literature on the subject and compares the features with similar ones found at other sites, including Yarim tepe 1(level 5)and Gawra tepe(levels XIX-XV.)
