Abstract
In order to answer the question of whether or nor there were supralocal cemeteries in southern Mesopotamia in Late Chalcoliithic times, the author examines the data from two large Late Chalcolithic cemeteries: those from late 'Ubaid Eridu and Susa, in Khuzistan, Iran, with its first four phases paralleling those of Mesopotamia. Vértesalji's investigation is carried out with a study of mortality rates and their relevance to estimations of prehistoric population size. Comparing the estimated population size with the expected number of burials for this population, the relationship between the physical settlements and the location of the corresponding cemeteries, the author concludes that …'there is probably only one known supralocal cemetery in Late Chalcolithic Mesopotamia: Susa' (p. 191).
