Abstract
This paper presents a structuralist's approach to the study of transitions and transformations in painted pottery designs of the Early and Middle Chalcolithic periods in Mesopotamia. Using this approach Vértesalji examines painted sherds from Halaf, Ninive, Samarra, Tell 'Abada, Tell Rashid, Tell al-'Ubaid, Ur, and Eridu in order to locate and describe some 'Ubaidizing' effects on the pottery decorations from these sites. In his analysis the author compares and contrasts motifs, designs, composition, and effects of the decorations.
