Abstract
In this article, the author examines the relatively rapid transformation of the Haraf culture by the Ubaid in 5th millenium Upper Mesopotamia. He notes the presence of exchange networks in the region and between upper and lower Mesopotamia. He also discusses the simliarities and differences between northern and southern Ubaid cultures, and sees many Halaf carry-overs in the former. Breniquet suggests that cultural transformation in the north could have occured as much by trade and borrowing ideas than by direct colonization of the north by the south.
