Abstract
This monograph reviews various theories of the origin of the state, evaluated in terms of a test case, namely the rise of the state during the fourth millenium BC on the Susiana plain of Khuzistan, Iran. A general information theory is suggested to explain this development and perhaps resolve the conflicting positions of other theories . This study attempts to show that increase in information processing requirements was a major determinant in the origin of the state in Khuzistan. In addition, it will argue that the relationshilp between information processing and societal complexity is equally applicable to explanation of primary states in general, and that factors resulting in increased information processing requirements may vary from case to case (p. 12).
