Abstract
Contrary to the theory asserted by Algaze that the Uruk expansion into northern Syria was based purely or even largely on trade, Schwartz suggests that while the earliest stage of southern penetration into the north, may have been for trade, as represented at the sites of Sheikh Hassan and Hacinebi, later settlers as they became more familiar with this great open area into which they had moved , saw it as a place to set up a new home beyond the control of leaders back home. This document explores in detail Schwartz's hypothesis why this may be true.
