Kharga Oasis in prehistory

Abstract
Caton-Thompson and others conducted archaeological and geological fieldwork in the Saharan desert to the west of the Nile Valley in the early 1930s, although the work was not published until 1952. Most of the work was conducted around fossilized spring mounds in the depression around Kharga Oasis and in the wadis along the edge of the Libyan plateau. This report discusses the Acheulean period through the Bedouin Microlithic and Peasant Neolithic periods. Only the time periods that pertain to the Middle Paleolithic are indexed for OCM (Outline of Cultural Materials) subjects; this means the Lower and Upper Levalloisian, the Levalloiso-Khargan, Khargan Industry, and the Aterian periods were marked. Caton-Thompson describes the geological strata in detail as this provided most of the clues needed to date the various sites and strata. The stone tools found are also described in detail with numerous plates at the end of the document. This monograph is particularly important for the infomation it contains on the Aterian.
