Abstract
This book is a synthesis of archaic Egypt. Emery considers the book only an introduction to Nile civilization during the first two dynasties. As most of the archaeology has been of kings' tombs and the records mostly deal with kings, the empahsis in this book is on the early kings. Emery discusses the kings of the first two dynasties, what is known of the government and social classes, the military and weapons, religion (mostly the different gods and what they represented), art, architecture (mostly as found in tombs), building construction, writing, trade, the stone and ceramic industries, metal work, jewelry, leatherwork, agriculture, furniture, and dress.
