Abstract
Winchell analyzed the ceramics from eight sites from the southern Atbai in Sudan. These sites are from the Malawiya/Butana Transition and from the Butana Group. These cultures were significant Neolithic cultures that had almost no contact with the Nile Valley and yet had large settlements and significant populations. Winchell compares these ceramics with the ceramics of other northeast African groups of the Neolithic and post-Neolithic (Badarian, Khartoum Neolithic, A-Group, Abkan Group, Karat Group, Late Neolithic of Central Nile Valley, Jebel Moya Complex, Shaqadud Cave, the Gash Group, Agordat, and Erkowit) and discusses how these various cultures are related to each other and how they are associated with the Khartoum Mesolithic (Early Khartoum). Clear and concise overviews of the various cultures mentioned above are given.
