Models of Paleoindian and Early Archaic settlement in the lower southeast

Abstract
Anderson believes the distribution of artifact concentrations in the eastern US occurs at 20-400 km intervals and may indicate the range of Early Paleoindian bands or macrobands. He describes his 'band-macroband model' of Early Archaic settlement and land use. The model was developed using data from the Savannah river basin from mostly lithic materials. Anderson sees the need to find and exchange mates in areas of low population densities as the critical factor shaping settlement systems rather than the location of lithic resources. The model is tested with data from North and South Carolina.
