Early Archaic settlement and technology: lessons from Tellico

By: Kimball, Larry R..

Abstract
Kimball describes the various archaeological investigations conducted by several different researchers in the Little Tennessee river valley prior to the inundation of Tellico lake. The most surprising finding was that deeply buried, stratified sites were fairly common. Kimball uses the Tellico database and includes data from Early Archaic sites in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park 'to ask questions both about diachronic and synchronic changes in Early Archaic settlement strategies and the organization of technologies.' (page 149). He describes the environmental context, the sites, the lithic technology, the stone tools, settlement pattern variation and land use for the two areas.
