Microwear analysis of Dalton artifacts

By: Yerkes, Richard W., Gaertner, Linda M..

Abstract
Yerkes and Gaertner conducted a microwear analysis of the stone artifacts selected by Morse and compared the wear traces on the tools from the Sloan site against wear patterns on replicas of the Dalton tools. The modern tools were used for antler, bone, hide, shell, stone, and wood working activities. The tools from Sloan were compared with those selected from two habitation sites (Lace, 3PO17 and Brand, 3PO139). The tools from the Sloan site were probably used in the ceremonial activities surrounding the burials or were made for grave goods to accompany the dead.
