Abstract
The author describes his excavations at Iyatayet, Madjujuinuk, Gungnuk, and Difchahak, all on or near Cape Denbigh, Alaska. All four sites contain artifacts of the Norton culture. Iyatayet is the site type where Norton culture was first recognized. Giddings describes the excavations, house floors, and artifacts found at each site. Good photographs of the artifacts, mainly from Iyatayet, are included as plates in the back of the article. Many of the artifacts from the Norton culture are very similar to more recent Eskimos. Some of the distinguishing characteristics of the Norton culture are check-stamped and linear-stamped pottery, stone lamps, and ground slate tools.
