Old Whalers

Beach ridge archaeology of Cape Krusenstern : Eskimo and pre-Eskimo settlements around Kotzebue Sound, Alaska, by J.L. Giddings and Douglas D. Anderson (20) • Published In 1986 • Pages: 231-267, 363-368 , plates

Abstract
The authors had originally expected to find oval houses of Choris culture on Beach 53. Instead, the artifacts and the shape of the houses quickly led them to realize they were dealing with a new culture. The whaling implements and the whale bones found at the site led the authors to designate the new culture 'Old Whaling'. As of the publication date (1986), no other Old Whaling sites have been found. To the authors the Old Whaling culture also seems to have no immediate predecessors and to have disappeared, leaving no antecedants. Five winter houses and five summer houses were excavated. Detailed descriptions of the houses and their artifacts are given.
