The Early and Middle Archaic Periods: material culture and technology

early and middle archaic research in virginia : a synthesis (22) • Published In 1990 • Pages: 81-98

By: Geier, Clarence.

Abstract
Geier points out much of the technology that is needed to adapt and acquire energy from a particular environment does not preserve and is not found in archaeological sites. This is especially true of the Early and Middle Archaic sites in the Middle Atlantic region where usually only lithic artifacts remain. These partial tool kits hamper the archaeologist's ability to fully describe a society's full range of sites, its seasonal round, and its way of life. Geier then describes what is known of the material culture and material technology for the Middle Atlantic region, describing the projectile points, other lithic tools, and the occasional other types of tools found (such as bone tools).
