By: Sassaman, Kenneth E..

Abstract
Sassaman examines the appearance and distribution of three mid-Holocene innovations: spear throwers (atlatl weights and bannerstones), grooved axes, and durable, heat-resistant containers (such as perforated soapstone cooking stones and soapstone and ceramic vessels). Spear throwers, grooved axes, and perforated soapstone cooking stones are all Middle Archaic artifacts. Sassaman also discusses some of the social implications associated with these artifacts.
