Southeastern Archaic mounds

By: Russo, Michael.
Abstract
Russo examines shell mounds throughout the Southeast during the Archaic and discusses evidence that they were intentionally constructed as early as the Middle Archaic. The sites specifically discussed which date to the Middle Archaic are: Monte Sano, Hornsby Mounds, and LSU Campus Mounds in Louisiana; Horrs Island and Tick Island in Florida; and Frenchman's Bend, Hedgepeth, Stelly Mounds, and Watson Brake in Louisiana. Russo believes economies based on aquatic resources helped bring about sedentism and societies complex enough to build these mounds.
