expand_more Description
The Eastern Late Archaic tradition extends from 6000 to 3000 BP in the Eastern woodlands of the United States. The people were semi-sedentary hunter-gatherers or hunter-gatherer-fishers. Domesticated plants were cultivated in some areas, but nowhere were the major source of food. Burial ceremonialism includes mounds, late in the tradition in some areas, modification of the body after death, red ochre, and specialized grave goods. Long-distance trade of stone, raw shell, and ochre, is evident, especially at Poverty Point.
