Abstract
The McKeithen site dates from circa 250-900 A.D. It can be divided into two phases: Weeden Island I (250-700 A.D.) and Weeden Island II (700-900 A.D.). Only the data that pertain to Weeden Island I (and that are presumabley Middle Woodland) were indexed for OCM (Outline of Cultural Materials) subjects. Milanich and others excavated and analyzed the McKeithen site in northern Florida. They found a site with a crescent shaped village midden and three mounds. The village dates from 200 A.D.-750 A.D., while the mounds date from 350 A.D.-500 A.D. Mound A once housed a charnel house; Mound B contained the remains of an elite person, assumed to be a religious specialist, and his house; while Mound C contained burials (primary and secondary internments). A survey of the county also turned up evidence of other Weeden Island villages and mounds in the area. And Milanich also places the McKeithen site within its regional context (the tri-state area of north Florida, southern Georgia, and southeastern Alabama) which included the Kolomoki site in southern Georgia. An unusual analysis is found in chapter 8 where possible interpretations of the animal symbolism represented on the elite and mound ceramics are explored.
