Preliminary investigation of the Pinson Mounds Site: 1963 field season [appendix 3]

Pinson Mounds : a middle woodland ceremonial center by Robert C. Mainfort, Jr (7) • Published In 1986 • Pages: 96-119

Abstract
This appendix describes the limited test excavations and surface collections Morse conducted at Pinson Mound in 1963. He examined six of the mounds, two habitation areas, and the large enclosure (the Eastern Citadel). He found evidence that the site was intermittently occupied from the Archaic up to the Historic period with the majority of the occupation and earthworks being built during the Middle Woodland. His work at the site helped other archaeologists to realize its importance as a Middle Woodland site (previously it had been thought to date primarily to the Mississippian period) and to establish Pinson Mounds as a state park.
