Abstract
Pavesic helped excavate and analyze the archaeological collection from Hells Canyon Rockshelter in Oregon. The site was probably used in the winter as a hunting camp. Site occupation occured from about 7,500 B.P. to 200 B.P. (5500 B.C. to 1800 A.D.). The phases that are in the Cascade time period are the Hells Canyon Creek phase (5500 B.C.-4500 B.C.) and Squaw Creek I phase (4500 B.C.-1500 B.C.) that extends beyond the Cascade time period. Hells Canyon Creek phase is considered to be occupations 1-5 and is found in layers E1, D, D1, D2, C2, and C3. Squaw Creek I phase is considered to be occupation 6 and is found in layer C. The Mt Mazama ash fall (dated to 4600 B.C.) and the Squaw Creek II phase are also found in layer C. Layer C is broken down into C, C1, and C2. Pavesic does not always clearly identify which artifacts belong to which occupations or layers during his artifact descriptions. All artifacts labeled as belonging to layer C were included in the analysis of this document. Therefore, the reader should use caution as some of the material in this document will be outside the time period. Pavesic's analysis centers around the point forms and the survival of the Cascade point (an artifact diagnostic of the the Cascade time period) in this area to around 105 B.C. (2105 B.P.).
